HMH Landscape Architecture staff provided landscape design services for an updated market-ready location in North San Jose. Private on-site amenities and improvements at the building entry, rear & side courtyards, corner plaza, and street frontage were constructed to bring a new, modern sense of place.
In a prominent location surrounded by other new and innovative businesses at North First Street and Rio Robles, the site is approximately 6 acres with an existing two-story building (~86,200 SF) originally built in 1984 for industrial research/development. The new outdoor space now provides colorful furnishings for seating and relaxing, contemporary-styled surface materials, and a “water-wise” plant palette to blend with the diagrammatic plan for the existing and new trees based on an arborist’s report. A new workplace that incorporates the indoor with the outdoor setting will serve as a creative and collaborative environment for the workers.
Before these improvements were built, existing visible site features and improvements surveyed were reconciled with data previously collected on the site. Grading and utility plans for the courtyard area modifications, entry modifications and finished grades were based on these layouts.
Stormwater treatment control measures were numerically sized following the hydraulic design criteria specified for flow-based treatment controls in the City’s Post Construction Urban Runoff Management Policy and Provision C.3 of the Santa Clara Valley Urban Runoff Pollution Prevention Program NPDES Permit.
